Summer Reading Assignments

Educational research shows that students lose some of the critical reading skills over the summer if they do not practice.  Reading as few as six books over the summer can help students retain or even improve their skills in reading!

Here at St. Thomas More, we wish to give our students a reason to keep reading.  Though we won’t assign six books for students to read over the summer, every year students will be required to read one, two or four books (depending on the class they enroll in).  These books are chosen by the English department and approved by Father Lampitt and the rest of the high school administration.

Click here to find out your specific assignment(s).

New Head Varsity Basketball Coach Named

The High School of Saint Thomas More announced that Anthony Figueroa has been named the new Head Varsity Basketball Coach for the Sabers. “We had a talented pool of candidates, and we’re excited to welcome Coach Figueroa into the STM family,” said Athletic Director Dan Hennessey. Figueroa was an Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach at Millikin University from 2008-2011, and also an Assistant Varsity Boys Basketball Coach at Centennial last year. Prior to that, he gained coaching experience as an Assistant at Lackawanna College in Scranton, Pennsylvania. “Coach Figueroa brings not only great coaching experience, but as a former college player, a genuine passion for the game,” said Principal Mike Scholz. Figueroa comments, “Basketball is about hard work, discipline, responsibility, accountability, and communication. If students are successful in those areas off the court, they will be successful on the court. You can’t have one without the other. I’m excited about coaching the Sabers and am thrilled to be part of this high school which is still so very young yet so rich in tradition.” This past season, the Sabers took first place in the Schlarman Topper Classic Tournament and the Monticello Holiday Hoopla and ended the season with a record of 18-11. Go SABERS!

Volunteers Needed for “Catholic Connected”

The High School of Saint Thomas More is hosting the 2012 “Catholic Connected: Beyond the Pew”, a celebration of faith and unity on Sunday, April 29th beginning at 7pm with music provided by students from STM. All Catholics in the Champaign vicariate and their guests are invited. Last year, this annual event drew over 1,100 attendees. We need volunteers to assist with parking and the delivery of the elderly via golf court to the school’s entrance. Please contact Mrs. Oliveira via return email or at 352.7210 if you are available to help.

“Catholic Connected” is a collaboration among the parishes of the Champaign vicariate to sponsor faith-filled, large group events. Among its goals are to increase faith, galvanize the community for evangelization, promote Catholic teaching and themes in the arts, and provide a venue for non-Catholics to experience the beauty and richness of Catholic thought. This year’s featured speaker is Dr. Marcellino D’Ambrosio, a Dallas-based author and retreat leader with special interest in teen evangelization and Hispanic ministry. The evening will conclude with a social reception. There is no charge to attend. More information is available online at www.catholicconnected.com.
