- Volunteers Needed for “Catholic Connected”
-
The High School of Saint Thomas More is hosting the 2012 “Catholic Connected: Beyond the Pew”, a celebration of faith and unity on Sunday, April 29th beginning at 7pm with music provided by students from STM. All Catholics in the Champaign vicariate and their guests are invited. Last year, this annual event drew over 1,100 attendees. We need volunteers to assist with parking and the delivery of the elderly via golf court to the school’s entrance. Please contact Mrs. Oliveira via return email or at 352.7210 if you are available to help.
“Catholic Connected” is a collaboration among the parishes of the Champaign vicariate to sponsor faith-filled, large group events. Among its goals are to increase faith, galvanize the community for evangelization, promote Catholic teaching and themes in the arts, and provide a venue for non-Catholics to experience the beauty and richness of Catholic thought. This year’s featured speaker is Dr. Marcellino D’Ambrosio, a Dallas-based author and retreat leader with special interest in teen evangelization and Hispanic ministry. The evening will conclude with a social reception. There is no charge to attend. More information is available online at www.catholicconnected.com.

- STM Mourns the Loss of Pioneers Jean Somers and Thomas G. Shanahan
-
The High School of Saint Thomas More mourns the loss of two of its pioneers – Jean Somers who passed away on December 14th and Dr. Thomas G. Shanahan who passed away November 9th. When The High School of Saint Thomas More was just an idea, Jean quietly gave countless hours of her time, treasure and talent to ensure the high school became a reality. She understood and appreciated the value of a Catholic education and was committed to supporting the high school’s mission of academic excellence and commitment to the Catholic faith. Jean’s spirit will live in our halls forever and the memories we have of her popping in with a smile that lit up the world, a laugh that made you laugh, too, and a positive attitude that made your day a better one.
Though Dr. Shanahan and his wife, Gloria, resided in Springfield, his heart remained in Champaign at The High School of Saint Thomas More. Many have said, “Thom was the ‘voice’ in making a case for a Catholic high school in Champaign.” On behalf of the entire STM community, we remain grateful to Dr. and Mrs. Shanahan for staying the course so that their dream, and the dream of so many others in our community, would become a reality in The High School of Saint Thomas More.

- Christmas Food Drive a Success!
-
STM Student Council hosted a toy/food drive to support those in need during the holiday season. Over the course of two weeks, STM students competed with their peers to see which class could collect the most donations. The competition was spirited, and STM collected more toys/food for charity than ever before! Because of the overwhelming response from the students, the entire school was hailed the winner, earning the coveted prize of a sweatpant day for final exams on Friday, December 16. STM is proud of its students and their dedication to the true meaning of Christmas!
